Gauging is solving problems

‘My passion for gauging stems from my love of problem solving and the huge variety of questions in our field that remain unanswered. Not a day goes by at D/Gauge where we aren’t tacking something new and improving our algorithms & tools. The relentless improvement is incredible and gets me out of bed in the morning.

I have built up a broad range of railway experience over the past 43 years. This helps me and the team appreciate the history, interactions and compromises between different disciplines. My role is to oversee and guide the bespoke gauging projects.

Having started my career in research, I know the value of innovation. I have been at the forefront of computerised gauging for 30 years. I know that our customers derive huge value from our ability to develop software quickly.’

Next-generational Gauging

As Managing Director, Colin Johnson has a wealth of experience in Aerospace, Motorsports and the Railway. He steers the D/Gauge team, oversees innovation and progressively reinvents gauging for the next generation.

"As an engineer, I know the complexity of our subject, but likewise I’m passionate about great presentation. Gauging connects every aspect of the railway and the outputs must be clear and insightful to non-specialists."

The Future of Engineering

"It’s so important for me to work for a company which strives to tackle new problems and adapts to make that happen. That’s exactly what we do here at D/Gauge. I’m all about looking for better ways to approach problems.

I lead the engineering team, ensuring we understand our client’s needs and ensure we deliver. My technical focus is electrification and probabilistic gauging. The mathematics and mechanics of these activities are really challenging and rewarding.

I’m hugely excited about how the industry is moving to electrify as well as thinking about clearances as risk, not just a number."

Assurance and Quality

"I specialise in vehicle introduction and am proud to have supported several clients from concept, all the way through to gauging acceptance. It’s great to see these new trains on the network!

I’ve been involved in gauging from the 1990’s going back to the introduction of tilting trains. I understand that a pragmatic approach is needed when working with so many stakeholders and suppliers.

Over the years we have developed a wide range of approaches to support our clients. My role as a principal engineer is to select the right approach to meet the client’s expectations, budget and timescales."

Novel ideas and novel application

"My railway background spans 25 years, covering vehicle gauging and infrastructure data. My passion is to understand the detail and I take a meticulous approach to modelling every gauging input.

Every millimetre counts when we are looking to run trains incredibly close to the infrastructure. I love that our software has been designed by gauging engineers, it allows me to really interrogate the numbers and make an informed decision.

Having been involved with Network Rail’s National Gauging Database from its inception, I have extensive knowledge of UK routes which allows me advise clients around the known gauging tight spots."
